A little off topic, but I'm mighty impressed Stan that you have a Lotus Europa! I still have my S2, put a 100K miles on it as my daily driver in my formative years! It really leaves an impression on you with respect to light weight, balanced handling, etc. Slam my M3?, excuse me but I've already been low...18" wheels, really... aren't those a little bit heavy? The M3 reminds me of the Europa's agility and balance, with a more interesting engine.

One of the instructors I had at the last drivers school had owned a Europa too (has a E30 M3 now). I thought I was the only one left out there!

And that's just it. I see this on Ebay all the freak'n time! Find a way to mention M3 in your ad and people will by it. From headlights to blinker stalks. It doesn't matter.

I was at a BMW meet at Donnington a few years back and one of the venders had a used M-Tech E30 rear wing for sale. Had it tagged for an M3. I asked him why and he says, "You know what it is, I know what it is, but they don't know.... hehehehehe..."

What can you do? Stand there like a moron and tell everybody who walks by that this guy is a cheat and a swindler? I told him he was being dishonest and he could bet I'd never do business with him.

Oh well. Actually, that these cars are so misunderstood is probably a good thing. If everybody knew them for what they are, their mystic, their charm, and their cult like devotion may not be the same.

You M pilots are way too sensitive:D .
I bought a Birkin a few years ago which you guys across the pond will know as a Lotus7, Caterham, or pre-lit Westfield type car. I've been asked whether it is a real car, a Rolls Royce, a prowler, or they simply yell"WTF is that!?"
This has made me pretty immune to inane questions about the M3.
In the US, Just about Every shopping cart sedan/saloon has a bigger rear wing on its rump than the M does, so it is pretty stealthy by todays standards.

Well I've never had any stupid comments about the M3 yet, but in my Renault R5 I've had a ton of hilarious ones.

I was driving out in the country side and some guy in a rusty Chevy pickup screamed "Go back to England!"

Another funny one was when I took the R5 to a car show and a guy comes up to me and says "So what kind of car is this?" and I politely said "It's a Renault R5 Turbo 2" And he asks "Oh is that one of them Mitsubishi's?" And I said "No, the company is Renault, it's the homologation version of one of the mid engine rear wheel drive rally cars from the 80's" He asks "Oh is it four wheel drive then if it's a rally car?" "No sorry, I just said its rear wheel drive." Then he kind of makes a gesture like he doesn't like the car and walks away.

One of the best ones I've seen was a Toyota Tercel with an E36 style body kit, spoiler and M3 badges. It was sooo funny, I had to drive into the parking lot it had pulled into, park my car, and stare at it to believe it. Also, I was at the dealer to get something, I don't remember, but the conversation went like this.

"What make car do you have?"

    "'88 E30 M3".

"Is that a two door or four door?"......

I can't go see dealers anymore. Everytime I visit them to pick up a part, it usually takes 10 minutes to explain what car i have. I have E30 M3 and 325 IX. Each is a rare piece without a doubt but I would expect a BMW Parts guy beeing able to know what those cars are. The last conversation went like this:

Me - Hi, i need a roof trim molding.
Pguy - Hi, what year is your car?
    Me - 1991 325IX
Pguy - Hmmmm... let's see... Is it a 4 dr?
    Me - Yes, 91 325IX 4dr.
    Pguy - Hmmmmm ...
Pguy - well, I see that 325IS didn't have the roof molding... what
    year is your car again?
    Me - it's a 91 325IX
Pguy - nope, not in the system... 325IS didn't have moldings...
Maybe yours have aftermarket add on?
Me - Can you please check if you are looking at the 91 E30 325IX?
    Pguy - Hmmmmm... let's see...
    Me - E30 and not E36... and as I said - it is a 325 IX!
Pguy - Oh, now that you said E30..! Yes, I see it now! Well, I was looking at the 91 E36 and those don't have the molding. Now i see it - 325IS Roof molding...
Me - Yes - 325 IS...whatever, it's the same body style, just order it!!!!

Damn... now how can he be called a BMW tech?
Speaking of body kit questions - I get that all the time!

When dealing with people like this I prefer to just quote the last 7 of my VIN. No questions, it will pull up your car. I do it enough now that I know both my cars by heart.

Well I have never seen an E30 M3 in life, i've just seen them in pictures and I will never mistake it for a normal E30, even if it does have a widebody kit on it, or maybe ill be confused if I see a damn 316i with M badges, cause u know once they put those badges on the car looks identical......HAHAHAHAHA
Someday when im rich Ill import my very own E30 M3 to South Africa (never came to our country)
