I did the search, but it just brought all the topics up...

I guess 15-W40 will do the job for cold weather?
    Thanks

there's 10w40 in there right now... but she won't be moving till May. I run it year round though. Next year I'm probably going to go 15w50 to see how it likes it. Haven't had any problems 15F-90F though with the 10w40 so maybe I won't change. meh.

Then you should have selected "Search titles only_" from the bottom left of the search page. :p

Two oils that kicked butt in dyno testing (on a WRX) using the same engine are:

    1) Castrol 10W60...the new M3/M5 stuff available only at the dealer...for around $8-9/quart. It's really good stuff!

    2) Mobil 1 0W40...used in all AMGs, in P-cars, etc. Widely available.

I run the first when the weather is warm, and the second when it's cold.

Lots of folks use M1/15W50 in S14s. But the Castrol stuff protects better and also helps output. Usually some pony's run and hide when you run thicker oil...but Castrol fiddled with the additives to cut friction losses more than the additional pumping losses remove.

The extra output is not huge...maybe 2-4 HP in many parts of the RPM range on a WRX.

I just put in Mobil 1 10/40. It seems to be just fine and thats what the dealer recommended..(not that they always know best).

Although I'm on the west coast and we don't get the freezing temps you guys do, some of the local guys here in So Cal have probably heard of NEO synthetic oil. I use all of there products as these guys are a small family owned Long Beach business with TONS of racing in their heritage, we're talking dune buggies, offroad, well just about everything.

Alot of local racers swear by them and they're good people, on price with mobil 1, amsoil redline etc. Full line of products and they ship worldwide too, check them out here www.neosyntheticoil.com

FWIW in that test the Castrol and the Mobil 1 0W40 beat out all of the boutique brands such as Royal Purple, Redline and some others. The 0W40 was the outright highest output oil they tested. It beat some light weight 0W20s too. They didn't test every oil out there of course. If all else is equal, a thicker oil tends to cut output since the stuff is harder to pump and so the oil pump draws more power from the engine. That's why the performance of the Castrol was a pleasant surprise.

At the time oil was specified for the S14, synthetics were not yet widely available, nor used as factory fill in many vehicles.

I buy'em by the case from my dealer for my E36 so I figured I could just put it in the E30

I have been using Amsoil Racing 20 50 for years. According to Amsoil, there product line tests out better than just about anything else.
