Find a 5WK9604 and install it, removing the stock AFM.
    It is a siemens MAF installed on Volvo S40 / V40 (?).
The bmw Z3 2.0 has a very similar sensor it changes only the last digit of the part number.
Find an ATS (whatever it is), install it where you please.
Connect the ATS to the pin 1 and 4 of the stock plug.
Connect the MAF as in the following (sensor / stock plug)
    pin 1/ pin 4
    pin 2/ pin 2
pin 3/ +12V (connect a cable to the + pole of the ignition coil).

The engine fires right up, no problem, smooth driving, no stalling or power drops.
Just a rich mixture at high loads.
At low/medium loads the lambda reading is almost the same than stock.
I'm going to map the high loads, but if you don't want to, you can drive without.
    Let me know.

Keep in mind it seems the OP has installed this on the 2.0 S14.
Results may not be as plug-and-play with 2.3 and 2.5 versions.

Could you use a MAF in place of alpha N if you wanted to get a carbon airbox or would it require a lot of mapping?

Why not just get the Miller maf kit? Proven, and designed on the car.

    Hi everybody.
It is correct that it could not work for the M3 e30, but if you find something at scrap yard maybe you can give it a try.
I don't know the Volvo year, i just found the sensor, search the sensor with the part number.
    ATS = Air temperature sensor.
I'll provide pictures as soon as possible.

So you would really risk your $1x,xxx car or what ever damage could be done to it by trying to save $280 and not using something specifically proven to work with the car.

Not for me, I rather save the money up to do the right mod and I'll drive with the stock AFM before I am the one to experiment with my car with something that may or may not work. Yeah small other things that can be replaced for relatively cheap no problem.

There are a lot of compatible parts between car marques... but you must do your homework on the exact perameters the part was designed for and your goal. I'm not knocking it, but risk vs reward factor with that part is high. Definitely document and share!
    Rich!
