As of this year, I've decided to run race gas. I picked up some Sunoco 260 GT 100 Unleaded from a station in NH to get started. (I may consider E85 in the future, but not this year...)

I'm wondering how much I'll need to haul with me each weekend. What grades of gas are available at tracks in the Northeast?

I know WGI has Sunoco 100UL, What about NHMS and Mosport? Others?

I know SUmmit has self serve pumps with all the Sunoco flavors at Main and Shenandoah.

I fill my cell and then carry 25 gals with me every weekend (5x 5gal jugs)
Race weekend,,, I'm lucky to use one 5 gal, but test days or a weekend school, etc, I could blow through all of not and maybe need to top up.

At my last estimate (which is a bit out dated), my car got about 10 MPG on track).

Mosport has pumps at the track. I never noticed if they have 100, but I'd be very surprised if they didn't. You know who would be a good resource to ask is Sam W. from COM.

Lime Rock has self-service pumps. Calabogie and Tremblant in Canada don't have pumps. I'd strongly advise against buying race fuel
at Mosport. Several years ago, they mixed up what fuel was in which tank and instead of 110, I got 93. I cracked 4 pistons, they
said I was crazy. The acid test was when Richard John (RIP) did an oil analysis just after the same event and asked me how he could
have high levels of lead in his oil. The light went on in my head and I asked him if he purchased fuel at Mosport. He said he did... 93 unleaded.
That's when we concluded that I got 93 unleaded, and he got 110 leaded, and we drained what was left in our tanks and confirmed.

Ron, ever since that happened to you I am so leery of buying anything other than AVGAS.
Thats what I run and have run for pretty much as long as I have been in involved in hotrods.
Your incident is always in the back of my mind.

You "have" to be able to trust what you are putting in your engine,,, and to me AVGAS the only fuel source I absolutely trust.
Keep in mind, I tune my cars with it, and its not a 100% 1:1 replacement, there are some differences that would be accounted for in the tune.

Even when I do have to buy fuel at the track I will look at it when its being dispensed for the dye color coding because of Ron's incident.

OT: I was thinking about Richard the other day. I really miss him.

Thanks for the heads up guys. Theoretically, my car should be fine on 93, so the 100 is there for insurance. I am still slightly worried pulling up to a Sunoco station that sells the 100 at the pump with the rest of the stuff, but that's the same argument as 93 anywhere you buy it...

Anyone know anything about octane testers (If there's even one available at a racer's budget...) ?

Pretty much every track in the northeast US has 100UL and 110L for sale. It's always wise tocall in advance. I usually pick up an extra 10-15 gals before I leave the track just so I have some on hand if needed next time.

You can get VP 109UL in Seekonk Ma and there is a place about 45 mins from the Glen that sells VP D109 - it;s the same as the VP109UL, but instead of being clear it;s dyed pink, But it is the same fuel. Oh, and it;s like $9/gal instead of $13.50/gal.
