the car has 92,000 miles on it and as far as I know has always run on non-synthetic. I am for sure changing the tranny out to a mtl but I am wondering what might happen if I change the engine and dif to a syn. Anybody done this before?

    Yes-Good idea.
Mobil 1 is good. Also Amsoil and Redline-but more expensive.Synthetic oil can withstand more heat than dino oil.
Redline makes a good transmission oil-MTL.
For the dif.I'd recommend the BMW diff oil-they use Castrol XJ.

Mel, is it true that the redline synthetics for the tranny are too viscous for the E30 M3 and thats why the Castrol Syntec tranny oil is better ?

Actually I prefer Redline D4 ATF for the tranny-I tried MTL in my E34 M5 and shifting was more difficult, especially on the track.I switched to Redline D4 ATF-much better. We only use D4 ATF in the E34 M5 and both E30 M3's.
For the dif., Redline caused dif. chatter.....switching to Castrol XJ eliminated the chatter.I buy the XJ from the local BMW dealer-can't seem to find it anywhere else.

Nothing wrong with the idea - one thing to consider: if your enging leaks now, it's going to leak worse with synthetic. for some reason it seems that this oil finds all spots possible. I personally don't mind that at all, it means it must lubricate better if it finds even the smallest leaks and unless you have that engine in a showroom is should leak! the different heat related expansion of alu and iron should be one reason....

I run Mobile one 15W50 in all my cars - never any issues....
