All I can say is that if you are not well versed on E30 M3's in particular...get a PPI by someone who is, especially with a mid 20K car.

Lots of good advice here....but, two important recommendations stick out IMO: 1. If you are well versed in E30's and especially M3's, you really are taking a chance buying "any" car without a PPI, and 2. the mileage thing.....I agree with Ironhead....lower mileage cars (if true & documented) don't automatically get you a better car!

That being said, I think I know exactly how you must feel....but, hasty decisions usually end badly...think with your head "not" your heart! "Things happen for the best"....another car will come along, but you will probably always be comparing the next car to this one you passed up. That's life!

One final thought....this seller....I always have said that I would never buy a car from a seller that I didn't feel was being 100% straight with me and appeared to be honest and had taken care of the car or at least had been totally honest with me about condition. This seller seems waaaaay too happy to sell to someone who hasn't done the proper pre-purchase due diligence. So, in the end, my gut tells me you are making a good decision in walking away.

Most of us who searched and bought one of these cars have our own stories, not unlike yours....in my particular case, after looking at several cars, and being tempted by a seller in the NE to buy a one owner (before him - he was a mechanic) '88 DS/Cardinal M3 for $21k (with only 45.9k mile). I walked because I didn't think the seller was being honest with me in our correspondence. I ended up with a 199k mile DS/Black '90 (from the South - no rust) that was mostly stock, except for a repaint and it had been totally gone through, for less money....and I couldn't be happier. I probably ended up with a better car for me in the end, since I didn't like the red interior. I got the color I wanted. Oh, and I did a PPI and the great compression #'s sealed the deal!

So, look "big picture", and do a PPI....then you will end up with a solid car and be happy in the end!

    Best of Luck,

    John

Well, the seller was waiting on another buyer to come through and was holding off. By the time we agreed to get a PPI done the specialty BMW shop was closed for vacations. In the interim this other non PPI buyer approached the seller and sealed the deal.

I'm bummed out but better off. Something else will come along it is just unfortunate I don't have the car this weekend because I'm vacationing with the family in beautiful Stowe (VT) and dreaming of the E30 M3 on these roads...

Well, if you're in VT there's an Alpineweiss / Black at Mountain Auto Sport in Ludlow, VT. I'm not sure how close it is to Stowe, but there's one sort of nearby for you to consider.

I really like that the guys selling that car took photos of all the common rust spots. Looks like a good one, cosmetically.
